NCN on Plundercast Explained - A new level of webcasting

NCN is broadcasting on Plundercast.net Tuesdays and Fridays at 12am and 10pm (EST) respectively.

The chain of production is settling into a process now.

Basically we (I use the editorial 'we', NCN, in associaton with SRN) are experimentally combining 'our' work with pre-existing work of other groups and artists through the use of techniques and effects. It is not just a flat 'play one cut then another then another' as in a 'normal' radio format. But rather the material is blended together and sometimes folded upon itself into a seamless stream-of-consciousness transitioned format, usually centered around a broad or narrow 'theme'.

NCN on Plundercast is basically a variety show with an ear toward collage, appropriation and digital deconstruction.

There is a lot of NCN in there, but a lot of other artists' work is used as well. Some of these artists (for example, Eric Bogosian, George Carlin, Devo, NIN, Negativland, Subgenius, and other collage artists) are more 'cool' with larger 'chunks' of appropriation being used than others major groups and labels, especially in the download versions.

This is taken into account.

Most work used by others is excerpted (that is somewhere between a sample and a whole song) and/or 'modded'.

A 'mod' is a piece done by someone else but modified through the use of editing techniques or effects. It is not changed so much as to call it a 'remix' because generally we do not get into the original tracks or individual ingredients of the song or piece that is worked on.

The spirit of, and idea behind, the 'mod' is like that of traditional folk music, whereby a song is 'tweaked' toward the sensibility of the person doing the modification and what they are moved to do with it. Samples could be added, effects could be applied, or it could be cut up, or changed in any number of ways.

If other 'techno-folk' artists then take that mod, and further modify it, eventually it will change dramatically as
the result of a group effort.

It evolves. Owner-lessly.

This was originally how folk music evolved and grew and spread, before copyright took hold of music. Copyright basically killed this aspect of legally modifying music and letting it grow and evolve through many hands.

Please don't sue us.

On the Tuesday version, you hear the raw cut. This could have been worked on for days or perhaps up to a week, currently.

The Friday show is really the best version of the show, as I have a better distance from the material by that time, and have a better idea of what works and what doesn't as per the smaller Tuesday audience's reaction to it (and my own). Friday at 10pm (EST) is is when most people listen.

Further modifications, editing, effects, and techniques are applied when the show appears on the NCN podcast. This is the definitve version and end product of the production process and can be downloaded.

Linkbacks and credits to each major clip are provided in the podcast information. I am frequently asked 'what is that song? where is that from? who does that?' and I refer people to the artists or albums involved.

Please don't sue us.

In addition to the Friday show being the 'best' live broadcast version, occasionally material from NEXT Tuesday's show will be played. So really that is the best time to listen.

BTW, we are on tonight at 10pm (EST) on www.plundercast.net for the re-broadcast of Tuesday's show. Tune in and be a part of life!

If you wish to donate to NCN and help out with bandwidth costs, and efforts, please see the page http://www.nationalcynical.com/donate.html. What you donate goes right back into the project. What you give today, you hear tomorrow!
